Hranek House in Sullivan County, NY.

We are pleased to present some 'sneak preview' images of the only oa-sys-based project in North America. The Hranek House was built by Matthew Hranek and his wife Yolanda as a retreat from New York City. The 1,400 square-foot house sits on a 130 acre site in Sullivan County in upstate New York and has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, main living area and a cellar.

The photos below, which were taken in November 2003, show the Hranek House in the latter stages of construction. The finishing touches will be completed in December. Apart from the concrete foundations/basement/cellar, all of the prefabricated building components were shipped from Europe, as was a range of custom-made furniture. On-site assembly was undertaken by contractors from Austria. Local tradesmen completed the plumbing and electrical work to meet code requirements.

oa-sys was developed by Austrian architect Oskar Leo Kaufmann for the Berlinger Holzbau timber construction company. For specific details on the system and an English translation of the oa-sys web site please see fabprefab newsletter 01.

A note on product availability: Berlinger Holzbau, the owners and vendors of the system, are focusing on their local market in Austria, southern Germany, Switzerland and Italy and will not be pursuing commercialization of oa-sys outside of this market area for at least another 2 years. Berlinger Holzbau have advised that they cannot respond to inquiries for further homes in North America at this stage - so please don't call them saying "I want one".

We will take another look at the Hranek House in the near future once construction is complete and the house has been furnished.

Credits: fabprefab would like to thank Martin Rempel, Marita Duevel from Berlinger Holzbau and the architect Oskar Leo Kaufmann for providing project information. We would also like to thank Matthew Hranek for generously sharing information on his cool new house.
